Busia County has been allocated 652 teacher vacancies under the national distribution plan. This is a welcome move for a county that has long struggled with teacher shortages.
The allocation is as follows: Bunyala (49), Busia (112), Butula (96), Nambale (65), Samia (81), Teso Central (59), Teso North (136), and Teso South (54).
Teso North has the highest allocation at 136 vacancies, reflecting the region’s large student enrollment. The county has been a hotspot for complaints regarding overcrowded classrooms, with some teachers managing up to 70 learners in one class.
The additional teachers will ease this burden, enhance teacher-student interaction, and improve learning outcomes. Parents are optimistic that this will reduce dropout rates, especially among girls, by improving the quality of education.
This allocation also provides a major employment boost for education graduates from Busia, many of whom have been unemployed for years.
