TSC Set Qualifications For Recruitment of Junior Secondary School Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has spelt out minimum qualifications for candidates seeking internship positions in junior schools. According to the guidelines, graduate teachers must hold a Bachelor of Education degree with two teaching subjects or equivalent qualifications such as a Bachelor of Arts/Science plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Applicants must also have a minimum grade of C+ in KCSE and C+ in two teaching subjects. Diploma holders are equally eligible provided they attained C+ in KCSE and in their teaching subjects. For technical teachers, qualifications may include a Bachelor of Education Technology, Bachelor of Science in relevant technical fields, Higher Diploma, or Diploma in technical courses.

The Commission has clarified that some degree holders in non-curriculum areas such as sociology, journalism, or theology will not qualify, regardless of additional postgraduate diplomas. However, allowances have been made for candidates in specialized areas like Economics (for Business Studies) and Social Education and Ethics (for Religious Education).

The guidelines also recognize bridging and pre-university certificates completed before December 2015, and teachers with hearing or visual impairments who trained with lower entry grades.

This clarity is expected to help thousands of applicants understand eligibility and avoid disqualification.
