Garissa County Allocated 139 Vacancies Amid Education Challenges

Garissa County has received 139 teaching vacancies in the latest distribution. While the number is lower compared to other counties, it is significant for a region grappling with insecurity and teacher shortages.

The breakdown includes: Balambala (34), Benane (5), Bothai (2), Bura East (3), Dadaab (10), Fafi (6), Garissa Township (32), Hulugho (3), Ijara (12), Lagdera (8), Liboi (8), Sankuri (12), and Shantaabaq (4).

Teacher shortages in Garissa have been worsened by frequent transfers due to insecurity. With this new allocation, the county hopes to retain more teachers, especially locals familiar with the environment.

Stakeholders urge the government to provide housing, security, and allowances for teachers in hardship areas. Without these measures, new recruits may shy away from deployment.

The allocation is a lifeline for Garissa schools and could mark a new chapter in stabilizing education in the region.
